Inside Tommy Bahama’s New St. Armands Circle Restaurant

St. Armands Circle has always been one of the crown jewels of Sarasota, so when Tommy Bahama opened a brand-new Restaurant, Bar, and Store right on the circle, I had to see it for myself. I got an inside look at the reimagined space and sat down with the team behind it: Rob Goldberg, Executive Vice President of Restaurants, Bars, and Food Concepts, Dawn Hummel, Regional Manager for Food and Beverage, and Connor Heath, District Manager for Retail. Here is the full conversation.

A Return to St. Armands Circle

A big part of our conversation was the vision behind the new location and what it meant to bring Tommy Bahama back to St. Armands. Rob talked through both the challenges and the opportunities of reintroducing the brand to one of Sarasota’s most iconic shopping and dining destinations. Opening on the circle is not like opening just anywhere. Expectations are high, the crowd is a mix of locals and visitors, and the space has to feel like it belongs. Hearing how the team thought about all of that gave me a real appreciation for how much intention went into this project.

Reintroducing a well-known name to a spot with that much history is a genuine balancing act. You want to honor what people already love about the circle while giving them a reason to come back for something new. From what the team shared, that tension shaped a lot of the decisions, and the result is a space that feels both familiar and fresh.

The Reimagined Dining Experience

If you know the Tommy Bahama name from the clothing, the restaurant side may surprise you. Dawn walked me through the elevated dining concept and what guests can expect from the redesigned restaurant, from the menu to the signature cocktails that lean into that laid-back, island-inspired feel the brand is known for. The goal, as I understood it, is a place that feels like a getaway without ever leaving the circle, where the food and drinks are as much a part of the experience as the atmosphere.

What struck me is how much thought went into making it feel elevated but still relaxed. That balance is hard to pull off, and it is exactly what makes a spot worth returning to instead of visiting once.

More Than a Restaurant

The new location is a Restaurant, Bar, and Store, and Connor gave me a look at the retail side and the new experience they have built around it. Bringing the shopping and dining together under one roof creates something bigger than either one on its own. You can enjoy a great meal and a cocktail, then browse the island-inspired retail collection in the same visit. It is the kind of blended destination that fits perfectly with the relaxed, spend-the-afternoon rhythm of St. Armands.

Why St. Armands Circle Matters

For anyone who is new to the area, St. Armands Circle is a landmark. It is a walkable ring of restaurants, boutiques, and galleries just across the bridge from downtown Sarasota and minutes from Lido Beach. Generations of locals and visitors have made it a tradition, and a new anchor like Tommy Bahama only adds to that draw. When a brand chooses to invest in a place like the circle, it is a good sign for the whole area, and as someone who watches this market closely, I pay attention to those signals.

Built for Locals and Visitors Alike

One theme that came through again and again is that this location was designed to be a fresh, island-inspired destination for locals and visitors alike. The circle draws people from all over, and the team clearly wanted a space that works whether you are a tourist making a night of it or a local looking for a regular spot. We also touched on the future of the brand, and it is clear this opening is part of a bigger vision, not a one-off. For anyone who lives on or near the barrier islands, having a destination like this a short drive away is a genuine perk of the neighborhood.

A Local’s Take

I spend a lot of time showing off the places that make the Gulf Coast special, and a new opening on St. Armands is exactly the kind of thing my clients love to hear about. When people ask me what it is like to live near Lido Key, Longboat Key, or the barrier island communities, spots like this are a huge part of the answer. World-class dining and shopping a few minutes from the beach is not something you find everywhere.

For my relocation clients especially, these little discoveries matter more than people expect. When you are moving from out of state, you are not just buying a house, you are trading one whole life for another, and the everyday details are what make the new one feel like home. A favorite table on the circle, a Sunday shopping stroll, a cocktail as the sun goes down over Lido, these are the moments that turn a new address into a life you love. That is why I make a point of knowing what is opening, what is worth your time, and what actually fits the way you want to live here.

If you are putting together your own Sarasota list, this pairs nicely with my guide to the best restaurants in Sarasota and my recent look inside Maso Steakhouse. And if you enjoy these behind-the-scenes tours, I have plenty more over on my video page.
